This process typically involves weakening judicial independence, curtailing civil liberties and press freedoms, manipulating electoral processes, and delegitimizing political opponents, all while maintaining a facade of democratic legitimacy. 

 The erosion of democratic legitimacy occurs when citizens lose faith in the fairness and effectiveness of their democratic institutions and processes. This loss of trust can stem from various factors, including widespread corruption, manipulation of electoral systems, suppression of opposition voices, and the concentration of power in the hands of a few, ultimately undermining the core principles of representative democracy and citizen participation.
